Croque Monsieur – the ultimate French toasted sandwich

Croque Monsieur – de ultieme Franse tosti

Ingredients:

  • 2 slices of white bread

  • 2 slices of ham (preferably French jambon de Paris)

  • 2 slices of Emmental or Comté cheese

  • Butter

  • Dijon mustard

  • Béchamel sauce (optional, for a more indulgent version)

Preparation:

  1. Spread a little mustard on one side of each slice of bread.

  2. Layer the ham and cheese, then close with the second slice of bread.

  3. Butter the outsides and toast in a pan until golden brown.

  4. For the classic version: top with béchamel sauce and a little extra cheese, then grill briefly in the oven until bubbly and golden.
